Michael Daniel Havrilla Obituary
Havrilla, Michael Daniel SAN DIEGO -- Michael Daniel Havrilla, 73, passed away on December 23, 2013. Michael was born in Passaic, NJ to Michael and Helen Havrilla. When Mike was a few years old his family moved to Clifton, NJ, where he went to elementary and high school. Mike attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after high school while pursuing degrees in electrical engineering and civil engineering. He also attended Fairleigh- Dickinson University and San Diego State University. Mike enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1959 and served until 1963. After finishing classes at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in December, Mike arrived at San Diego Marine Recruit Depot in January to attend Radio-Relay school. He thought he landed in paradise. Mike loved San Diego so much he was hoping to live there someday. After leaving the Marine Corps Mike worked for the Bendix Corporation in Teterboro, NJ. He worked on the guidance systems for the Saturn and Apollo manned missions. He was passionate about his job; working in the white room conditions and on instruments going to the moon. Mike met the love of his life Mary Lou and shortly after they were married and moved to San Diego. Cubic Corporation was Mike's next place of employment, working on projects for the United States Navy and Air Force. Unfortunately layoffs are common in this industry. So Mike pursued work with city government. He decided a permanent job would make him a better provider for his young family. Thirty years later he retired from the City of San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater - Program Management department. While working for the city he became a professional engineer in the State of California, another of his hard working achievements. Mike found the work interesting and won a few awards for his hard work, also making good friends. Mike's interests varied including his reading materials, even accumulating his own library. Any subject you could name he had a book on it ready to show you. Other interest were going to Shakespeare plays at the Old Globe Theater, jogging around Mission Bay, donating blood at the San Diego Blood, he received a great looking Stetson hat for his efforts. Some of his favorite times were spent tutoring family friends and acquaintances college math. They said they better understood math after his help. He also enjoyed writing humorous short stories. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and children. Mike is survived by his wife Mary Lou, daughter Elaine and son-in-law Tom Cahill of San Diego, son Michael of Washington state, brother Edward and sister-in-law Karen Havrilla, niece Kristin Clarke, nephew David Havrilla of Connecticut, Sister-in-law Barbara Magee of New Jersey. Mike died from Lewy-Body dementia. He was given excellent care by the caregivers and staff at Elmcroft of Point Loma. Our family is very grateful to all of them. Services will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on January 8th at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers family request donations to Alzheimer's foundations.
