Richard V. Mergens Obituary
Mergens, Richard V. LAKESIDE -- Born in Fairmount, North Dakota on April 26, 1931, Richard moved to San Diego to join his parents Raymond and Florence after serving in the Army during the Korean War. He attended San Diego State University and in 1956 married Marilyn Mayhew, the love of his life. For over thirty years he shared his passion for science, teaching in the San Diego Unified School District while building a large clientele for his tax and financial consulting businesses; a proud provider for his six children. With a quick wit and quiet generosity he touched many lives. He was affectionately known as the "Tax Toad" to his family. His passions included many local sports teams, crosswords, bridge, and mastering the art of "geezer golf". In his last years, he supported Marilyn to the end of her fight against cancer. Just over a year later he succumbed to his own battle with Parkinson's Disease. Richard will be remembered by his brother Daniel (Elizabeth) of Omaha, Nebraska and by his children James (Barbara), Rosemary (Robert), Joseph, Peter (Jane), Teresa, Daniel, his eighteen grandchildren, great-granddaughter, family, and friends. A mass and reception to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lakeside. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Parkinson's Disease research at www.pdf.org or www.michaeljfox.org.
