Sheridan Jay "Jay" Underwood Obituary
Underwood, Sheridan Jay "Jay" A World War II Veteran decorated combat pilot SAN DIEGO -- Sheridan Jay "Jay" Underwood, 90, went to be with the Lord on December 3, 2013. Born on December 3, 1923, in Gary, Indiana, to Jay Melvin Underwood and Freida Francis Sill, Jay attended Lew Wallace High School. Following graduation, Jay worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Gary and, shortly thereafter, he entered the United States Marine Corps. After completing flight training, First Lieutenant Jay Underwood distinguished himself as a World War II Marine Corps combat pilot who flew missions in the Pacific Theater from June 1943 to November 1945 earning among other decorations, the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO, completing his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering in1949. While in Colorado Springs, he married Mary Irene Henderson on July 10th followinghis graduation, went to work for the telephone company and relocated to Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. In 1952, Jay and his family moved to San Diego where he spent the remainder of his life. He worked for Bell Telephone for over 39 years. Mary passed away on February 7, 1988 after a long illness. They were married over 38 years. On June 17, 1988, Jay married Barbara Davis "Bobbi" Robertson. Bobbi passed away on October 11, 2012. They were married nearly 25 years. Sheridan is survived by his brother Jim Underwood, his wife, Lois. He is also survived by his two sons, Tom and Mark Underwood; Tom's wife, Cindy; their two children, Jeff and Lawren; Lawren's husband, Mark Perry; and their daughter, Paige. He is also survived by his three stepchildren, Ken Robertson, Mari-Lyn Robertson, Robin Nichols; their spouses Cathy Robertson and Tom Nichols; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family will hold a private funeral ceremony at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we are requesting donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund (www. woundedwarriorproject. org) "in memory of" Jay.
