Lt Col. Thomas J. Bardon USMC Ret. Obituary
Bardon, Lt Col.Thomas USMC Ret. FALLBROOK -- Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J. Bardon, USMC Ret., passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Fallbrook at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2013, at the age of 93. In his last months, he was lovingly attended to by his devoted wife, Nancy, his compassionate caretaker Oneila Lopez, and the kind and competent staff of the Elizabeth Hospice. Tom was born in Boston, MA, on May 2, 1920, the son of Thomas Patrick and Vivian (Brigham) Bardon. He spent his early years in Boston, graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School, received his B.S. from Bentley University, and later received his Master's degree from the University of Maryland. In 1941, at the age of 21, Tom enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and remained on active duty as a proud and passionate Marine for 22 years. During World War II, he was decorated for his service in the Pacific Theater, and in the 1950s, he commanded a squadron as a helicopter pilot during the Korean War and Vietnam. Tom was a true patriot; in recognition of his commitment to his country, an American flag was flown at half-mast over the United States Capitol on December 18, 2013 by the United States Marine Corps. This flag will be presented to his wife at his funeral. After retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1964, Tom worked for Teledyne Corporation in Northridge. He spent the last 26 years of his business career as a stock broker with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter until retiring as Senior Vice President of Investments. During his last 20 years living in Fallbrook, Tom had three deep and all- consuming passions - his wife, Nancy, his family of seven children, fifteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and always the United States Marine Corps. Although he was the epitome of a responsible, conscientious and dedicated father, grandfather and military man, Tom's deepest identity was as a United States Marine; so much so that the Marine Corps' birthday on November 10th was his true annual celebration rather than his own birthday in May. Tom was always energetic, and he loved spending time with Nancy who was always close by to answer his frequent calls of "Honey." He kept busy managing the household, monitoring the stock market, watching football (especially his favorite Brian Williams), chatting with neighbors on Pala Mesa Oaks Drive, and hosting family holiday celebrations. Tom was the strong pillar, the stable center of his family, and the image of him, the memory of him, will sustain them and inspire them to do the right thing, and even the difficult things. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Nancy Mary Bardon; five sons, Larry Bardon, Greg Bardon, Kevin Valentino, Chris Valentino, & Scott Valentino; daughter, Lisa Henderson; 15 grand- children; two great- granddaughters; and niece, Joanna Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Virginia; brothers, Francis and Joseph; sister, Helen; and youngest son, Jeffrey. His caretaker, Oneila Lopez, attended him in his last months with inexhaustible energy, grace, and patience, as did the excellent staff from the Elizabeth Hospice. A viewing will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary, 333 North Vine Street, Fallbrook, CA 92028. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish, 450 S. Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, CA 92028. Please arrive on time because we will have a one hour Mass. The burial, with a full 21 gun salute and military honors, will take place after the Funeral Mass from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA 92057.
