Hawley, Jr., Thomas Peck 07/06/1938 ~ 05/03/2014 SAN DIEGO -- Tom passed away 3-May-2014 following complications from Parkinson's disease. Tom was born in Portland, OR and grew up in Tenafly, NJ. He attended Salisbury Prep School in CT and then Cornell University. He graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack, NJ. In 1964 he was commissioned a US Navy Ensign in Newport, RI. After commissioning, he married Martha Westcott in Tenafly, NJ. As a surface-line naval officer, Tom served as a chief engineer on several destroyers. In 1970-71 he served in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star. He was subsequently promoted to Executive Officer (XO) of the USS Southerland DD743. After completing other duty stations, he retired from the Navy after 23 years of service, in San Diego. He then earned an MBA and taught Info Technology at local colleges until 1997. In retirement, he resumed his life-long love of art and painting. He was also active in PSWA, carving and painting ducks and birds. For 10 years he was a Senior Volunteer for the California Fish and Game. He is survived by his wife, Martha and three sons, Thomas, Stephen and Jonathan and eight grandchildren. Memorial donations can be made in his name to The Mission Hospice.
