Obituary Condolences

SERRA, WILLIAM E. Birth - September 19, 1930 Death - January 20, 2013 Loving father, grandfather, and friend, passed away in San Diego. He was born in Queens, NY, one of 6 children, son of Thomas and Mildred, and was a longtime resident of Asbury Park, NJ. He attended University of Notre Dame, and later married Ruth Jean Britton in 1950. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Jean; a sister, Joan; 3 children, Patricia Black, William Jr., and Bruce; two grandchildren, Nathan and Anabel; a step-granddaughter, Shea O'Keefe; one great-grand-son, Rocco; and a step-great-grandson, Aidan. He was a pioneer in the athletic scholarship placement industry by starting College Athletic Placement Service (CAPS) in 1971. In 1973 he placed the first female athlete scholarship at the University of Miami (FL). He later was interviewed on the NBC Today Show, and was featured on the cover of the Wall Street Journal. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, as well as those who benefited from his guidance in the academic world.
