Wallace Leo Emory Obituary
Emory, Wallace Leo VISTA -- Wallace Leo Emory, 86, died September 13, 2013 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born April 10, 1927, in Bronte, Texas, to Robert and Agnes Emory, he grew up in San Angelo, TX. He had a great desire to fly and at 16, he earned his first Airman Flight Certificate. He served in the US Navy from March 1945 to August 1946. He returned to San Angelo, attended Junior College and worked as Manager of the North Concho Airfield. He reentered the military in 1949 as an aviation cadet at Randolph Field, Texas. This led to a 22 year Air Force career retiring in 1970 as a Lt. Colonel. His career included tours in Japan; Oklahoma University earning his BA Degree in 1958; USAF personnel advisor to the Royal Saudi Air Force; and Patrick AFB, FL, where he flew NASA support for the Apollo 11 space missions. In 1971 Wallace began his 25 year career with the Federal Aviation Admin as an Aviation Safety Inspector. He was a Principal Operations Inspector for Eastern, Continental, Western, Flying Tigers, and Air California Airlines. He was Manager, of the Intl Field Office, Frankfurt, Germany from 1981-1987. Upon assignment to FAA Oklahoma City offices he managed the Branch charged with writing all airmen tests for the Agency. He was an Airline Transport Pilot, with ratings in the B-707,720, 727, 737, CE500, and Lear Jet. During both of his careers he received many honors and awards, national and international. Wallace was not all work. He was an avid golfer. He enjoyed flying his Beach Bonanza, tennis, skiing, cruising, music, and loved to dance. He is survived by his wife, LaVaughn of 39 years; son Neil (Maria), daughters Sandra Lawrence (Jack), Krista Morrison (Stuart), stepson Steven Harris (Kathy), stepdaughter Cynthia Harris, and four grandchildren, Joshua VanValkenburg, Lucas, Sage and Vincent Morrison; and brother Tommy Joe Walter (LaJan). Services will be at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA, on October 9.
