William N. "Bill" Shadel Obituary
Shadel, Col. William N. LEUCADIA -- Colonel William N. "Bill" Shadel, died at home of natural causes on April 3, 2014. He was rated a command pilot who flew fighter jets bravely in defense of our country. Born in Inglewood, CA in November 1920, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943, began flying fighter jets for the Air Force in 1948, flew 92 combat missions in Korea, and 137 combat missions in Vietnam. He retired a full Colonel, the commander of the 602nd Tactical Control Group in 1975. His fondest memories were of flying F-86s. Among his decorations are: the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal the one oak leaf cluster, The Air Medal with nine oak leaf clusters, the US Army and USAF Commen- dation Medals with one oak leaf cluster, plus several foreign decorations. Bill is survived by two sons and their wives, and four grandchildren. His wife Betty died in 1993 after 51 years of marriage. He mourned her passing to his last day.
