Obituary Condolences

HANLEY, ANDREW WILLIAM Monsignor Andrew William Hanley, aged 98, died November 7, 2012, at Nazareth House. He was born on February 1, 1914, son of Martin and Beatrice Hanley, in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, Ireland. Educated first at Catholic schools in Ballaghaderreen, he graduated from St. Nathy's College in 1934. He completed studies for the priesthood at St. John's Seminary in Waterford, Ireland, in 1940. While in the seminary, he was incardinated into the Diocese of San Diego. He was ordained in 1940, by Bishop Jeremias Kinane of Waterford, to come to California. His first assignment in San Diego was as assistant pastor at Sacred Heart, Coronado, in 1942. In 1943, he transferred to be assistant pastor of Holy Rosary, San Bernardino, for four years. He then served as pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Ramona, for a year. A few months as administrator of Our Lady of the Lake at Lake Arrowhead followed, in 1948. Father Hanley then became pastor of St. Ann's Parish, Needles, ministering there until 1964. He also acted as dean during that time. His next assignment was as pastor of St. Agnes, San Diego, for six years. In 1970, he was made pastor of St. John the Evangelist, San Diego. He was named a monsignor in 1976, and continued at St. John the Evangelist until retiring in 1988. In retirement, Monsignor Hanley lived in San Clemente, then at Nazareth House. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16, at Nazareth House Chapel, 6333 Rancho Mission Road, San Diego. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
