JOHN WALTER WOHLWEND Obituary
WOHLWEND, JOHN WALTER November 14, 1941 to November 30, 2012 A man whose generosity knew no bounds, John passed away on November 30th after complications from heart surgery. He was 71. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a talented engineer, John devoted himself to the two great loves of his life - his family and his career. Born in 1941 in St. Paul, Minnesota, John moved to San Diego in 1964 and began working for General Dynamics, marking the start of a prolific 48-year career. In his early days, John contributed to the fuselage designs for both the Space Shuttle and DC-10, but his greatest achievement came in 1975 when he was introduced to Vivian Somogyi. While described by many as polar opposites, John and Vivian were really two halves of one person, giving each other a balance that would hold true for 35 years. The two married in 1977 and quickly started a family. Andrew was born in 1978 and David arrived in 1980. Over the next 32 years, John gave his typical 150% effort toward everything he did. As an engineer, he worked on the EMALS and ITER programs for General Atomics. As a father, he was a constant source of support and advice. When John became a grandfather, he found such joy in playing with the kids that others often had to pry them out of his arms. But lastly, it was his devotion to his wife that defined John's life. A quiet mid-westerner at heart, John acknowledged that Vivian injected a much-needed vivacity into his life. He often joked that "Minnesotans didn't do feelings," but over time, John learned to share them. "Your mother saved me," he told his sons. "She gave me a life I could only dream of, and I hope you find women like her to share yours with." John is survived by his wife, Vivian, his children, Andrew and David, daughter-in-law, Jessica, grandchildren, Olivia and Zachary, his brother, James, sister, Jane, and their families. Private funeral services have been held. A celebration of his life will take place on January 13, 2013. Please contact the family for details. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Diego Humane Society and the . John truly was a gift to all who knew him.
