MIKE WEST Obituary
iconWEST, MIKE June 3, 1948 to January 20, 2013 Mike passed away Sunday morning with his wife, his son, and the West family by his side. A native San Diegan and avid outdoorsman, fishing was his greatest passion. Even making it his career for a time, working with the San Diego tuna fleet during the 1970s. However, he was happiest when catching crappie at Lake Cuyamaca, or on his boat, The Banshee, in the waters off San Diego. A skilled mechanic, he spent 30 years repairing Navy ships at AAA South and Southwest Marine along the water of San Diego Bay. His garage was his domain, and from it he could fix seemingly anything. It was from his garage that he based his other lifelong passion for motorcycles. Wherever he lived, you could be sure to find a motorcycle, sometimes in various stages of completion. If you found yourself with a problem, you could always count on him for a cold Coors Light, a liars fire, and dose of garage wisdom. Mike worked extremely hard to provide for his family, which meant everything to him, sometimes picking up a second and third job if the situation called for it. He was an excellent cook, and was beloved for his big breakfast, fish frys, and famous turkey soup. A devoted family man to his wife and sons, he seemed to be everyone's favorite uncle, brother, cousin, in-law or out-law. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Michelle, his sons Vincent and Erik, his mother Grace, his grandchildren, and many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, in-laws and 'out'-laws. There will be a memorial service held at Shelter Island, Pacific Portal Gazebo on February 1st at 1 p.m. Wake following at The La Jolla Brewhouse, 7598 Eads Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037.
