JANET GAIL KIMBALL Obituary
KIMBALL, JANET GAIL Janet Gail Kimball of San Diego, California died at home February 13, 2013 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born November 1, 1938 in Altadena, California, Jan grew up in Fallbrook with her twin brothers, Bob and Don Kimball. A graduate of Fallbrook High School (class of 1956) and San Diego State University (class of 1960), she spent her first two years after college working for the YWCA of Denver, Colorado, returning to San Diego to work at the Regina Coeli Academy as a teacher and girls' volleyball coach. This experience led to her decision to make teaching a career; she returned to school and obtained her public school teaching credential. In 1966, Jan began her thirty-three year career at Bonita Vista High School, the year the school opened, teaching PE and English. In 1974, she began coaching girls' varsity volleyball and softball. During her coaching career, her volleyball teams won eight league championships and four of five CIF championships. Her softball teams also made it to the CIF playoffs each year and won six league championships. After retiring from coaching in 1990, Jan was awarded the High Schools Sports Association 1994 Service Award, and in 1999, she was inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions as a High School Coaching Legend. This honor is reserved for those retired high school coaches with a minimum of ten years of service as a varsity head coach who have demonstrated outstanding performance and sportsmanship both on and off the field of play. She was particularly proud of being so honored. Jan retired from teaching in 1999 (she was the last of the original Bonita Vista Barons to retire) but continued to substitute at Bonita for several more years. She spent the rest of her time traveling and saw most of the world, telling those who asked about her travels that she had been everywhere but India. Jan also enjoyed playing bridge with her long time bridge group, and tutoring Korean students in English. She was a lifetime member of the Chula Vista Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her nephew Brett Kimball, his wife Karen, and grand-nieces Jennifer and Kristi; her nieces Nancy Demary, Melissa Kimball Seymour, and Theresa Kimball Price, as well as a number of other grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held at the First Methodist Church, 2111 Camino del Rio South, San Diego Friday, March 1st at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Jan requested donations to Bonita Vista High School, 751 Otay Lakes Rd., Chula Vista, CA. 91913 to support girls' athletics. Checks may be made out to Bonita Vista ASB with a notation: girls' athletics. Jan will be sorely missed by her family and friends, and all those students whose lives she touched.
