Emery B. Smith Jr. Obituary
Smith Jr., Emery B. ENCINITAS -- Emery B. Smith, Jr. passed February 2, 2013 peacefully in his sleep at home in Encinitas after a lengthy illness. His wife of 56 years was at his bedside. Born in 1928 in Melrose, Massachusetts, his 45-year railroad career began in 1943 on B&M RR as a towerman, then as train dispatcher. Petty Officer Smith served as a plane Captain in the Korean Conflict from 1950-54. In 1966, he went to Santa Fe RR at San Bernardino Station, while also attending Valley College. In 1980, Amtrak moved him to Del Mar where he eventually became the Station Agent, retiring at age 60. He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his daughter and her husband, Shirley and Mike De Marco; and two granddaughters, Tiana and Ariana. He enjoyed family and old friends, model railroads, old films and traveling. An avid "ship buff," he took his entire family on two of his many cruises. A member of: US Navy League, Steamship Historical Society, Ocean and Cruise Society, AARP, life member of Encinitas Elks Lodge #2243, and a former Mason. Ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony. Donations may go to Hospice of the North Coast, Carlsbad.
