LAURA JOYCE HILTZ Obituary
HILTZ, LAURA JOYCE Laura Joyce Reed Hiltz, born February 20, 1933. Died February 11, 2013. Born to Robert A. and Laura C. Reed. Laura came to San Diego in June 1954 after graduating with a B.S. in Art Education from the University of Minnesota. In 1955, married James T. Hiltz of Point Loma. After moving to New York City, a son, James F. was born in 1956. In 1958, the family moved back to North Hollywood, where Jim created animation for Jay Ward, and Bill Scott (Rocky and Bullwinkle, etc.) and TV commercials. In 1959, Laura Ellen was born. In 1961, the family moved to Holland where Jim set up Cine Cartoon Center for Dutch TV. The five years spent in Holland provided several fabulous vacations. The French Riviera, Costa Brava, and the Cannes Film Festival where Jim won several prizes. After returning to San Diego in 1966, Jim and Laura divorced and Laura returned to San Diego City schools, as a substitute then in 1967, art teacher at Horace Mann Junior High. After 14 years, she went to Serra High School where she taught art, english, and advised the newspaper Serrandipity. She retired in 1993 then volunteered at Mama's Kitchen and the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop until health problems prohibited participation. She is survived by her son James F. Hiltz, daughter Laura Ellen and husband Geof Gibson, brother Robert A. Reed II and wife Karen, their three sons and four grandchildren.
