James L. "Jim" Barnes Obituary
Barnes, James L. "Jim" SAN DIEGO -- James L. Barnes "Jim" passed away peacefully on June 13, 2013, in the loving presence of his three children. Jim was born on November 20, 1919 in Virginia. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1938 and his duties led him to San Diego, where he met the love of his life, his wife Dorothy Griswold. They were married in 1942, a marriage that lasted 51 years until Dorothy passed away in 1993. While in the Marine Corps, Jim's duties took him to Iceland to support our British allies and then to the Pacific, where he participated in the Solomon Islands campaign. Stateside, his duties included escorting the remains of fellow Marines from the Pacific campaign home to their families, recruiting duty, and logistics support. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps in 1958, Jim attended San Diego State University and graduated in 1962 with his Teacher's Credential. He taught at the Elementary Level in the San Diego Unified School District for nearly 15 years. He then began his many entrepeneurial ventures. He was a previous Owner/Operator of the Crown Club in Pacific Beach (now Rocky's Crown Pub), was the Owner/Operator of Barney's Deli in National City, and was a driver for Carey's Limousine. Jim was a volunteer for the American Red Cross at the Balboa Naval Hospital and also worked as an Ambassador for Secure Horizons. Jim was active at St. Charles Borromeo parish for over 50 years, supporting both school and church activities, including the Knights of Columbus. Jim was predeceased by the passing of his wife, Dorothy, in 1993 and granddaughter Leanna McConnaughey in 2010. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Judy and John Katick, Janet and Bud McConnaughey, Gary and Patty Barnes, 7 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Pt. Loma on Thursday, June 20th, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Charles Borromeo Academy, 2808 Cadiz St, San Diego, CA 92110.
