Schimitschek, Erhard J. 12/08/1931 ~ 06/07/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Dr. Erhard Schimitschek was born in Neutitschein, Czechoslovakia. He and his family were relocated to Höchstädt/Donau, Germany, after World War II. Dr. Schimitschek went to school in the neighboring town of Dillingen/Donau, where he met and, in 1956, married Elisabeth Tausendpfund. In 1957, he obtained is doctor's degree in physics from the University of Munich. The Schimitscheks immigrated to the United States in 1958, first to New York, and eventually settling in San Diego. Dr. Schimitschek worked for Convair for a short time, but spent most of his career working for the U.S. Navy at the Naval Ocean Systems Center in Point Loma. There, he designed and built the first liquid laser that produced a visible light beam. He holds numerous patents from his work in the field of laser communications. Erhard Schimitschek is survived by his wife, Elisabeth, two children, Robert and Martina, and one grandchild, Anna. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 27, at St. Agnes Catholic Church.
