Dorothy Toulon Smith Obituary
Smith, Dorothy Toulon SAN DIEGO -- Dorothy Toulon Smith passed away peacefully on July 1st, in her home in Mission Hills. She was ninety-six. Born August 27, 1916, in Pensacola, Florida, Dorothy was the daughter of Captain Alfred Joseph Toulon, Medical Corps, US Navy, and Mabel Goodier Toulon. She was the second of four children, growing up on various military bases in the United States, Panama and Santo Domingo. Dorothy graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and was living at home with her parents in Washington D.C., when she met her future husband, Jerome Frost Smith, of San Diego, who was also a Navy doctor. They married April 2, 1939, in Fort Meyer in Arlington, Virginia, and had three children: RADM Jerome Frost Smith Jr. USN (ret., Jill), of Annapolis, Maryland, Alfred Toulon Smith, (Susan), of San Diego, and Dorothy (Dossy) Goodier Smith White (Jack), of San Diego. During Dr. Smith's wartime Navy service in the Pacific, Dorothy and her young sons followed ship movements up and down the Pacific coast, and when he was overseas, they moved in with her parents at naval hospitals in Great Lakes, Illinois, and Sun Valley, Idaho, where her daughter, Dossy, was born. After World War II, the family returned to San Diego where Dr. Smith was in private practice for ten years prior to being recalled to active duty in the Navy. During her husband's service, Dorothy moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and to Corpus Christi, Texas, and upon his retirement, they relocated to Richmond, Virginia. When her husband died September 21, 1973, she returned to a permanent home in San Diego where she lived until her death. Besides her children and their spouses, she leaves behind seven grandchildren: Commander Jerome Smith III, Dorothy Altmiller, (Brian, Herndon, Virginia,) Jack White, (Jennifer, San Diego,) Dan White, (Lori, San Diego), Ben White, (Meredith, Lafayette, California), Aaron Arnout, (Brooklyn, New York, (Martha Smith, fiancé Jeremy Nelson, Jersey City, New Jersey), and ten great-grandchildren. Dorothy was an alumna of Kappa Alpha Theta and a member of The Wednesday Club. She was also a parishioner of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, volunteering for many years at the church's thrift shop, and enjoyed several European tours sponsored by her church group. The family would like to thank the many kindnesses of long-term caregivers, Juanita Deleon and Rose Etheridge. Services will be held Friday, August 9, at 2 p.m., in the chapel at Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, the Very Reverend James Carroll presiding, with interment to follow at the National Cemetery at Arlington, Virginia, where her ashes will be placed next to those of her beloved husband.
