Jackie Scanlan Obituary
Scanlan, Jackie Our Family's Matriarch and an Extraordinary Woman 10/23/1942 ~ 11/22/2013 CARLSBAD -- Jacqueline A. Scanlan passed away November 22nd after a 10 year struggle with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas, California. She was 71. Jackie was a Naval Officer's wife, mother, and friend. Jackie was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. She grew up in Pensacola, Florida where she met and married Paul T. Scanlan. Jackie and Paul were married for 43 years prior to Paul's death and lived and traveled abroad extensively during their marriage. Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul T. Scanlan, her mother, Rebecca Steckel, her sister, Norma Roberts, and her son, Paul Timothy Scanlan II. Jackie is survived by her three daughters, Kimberly Southwell, Kristen Doan, and Kourtney Kennedy. Jackie was also a proud grandmother of Carter Doan, age ten, and Morgan Doan, age seven. Jackie was a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow and served as a volunteer for many organizations throughout her lifetime; she spent a significant portion of her time volunteering for the American Red Cross. She was a decorated and extremely successful Tupperware Dealer, and talented floral designer. She only had two goals in life: to be a good wife and mother. Jackie always seemed to have a smile, story to share, and sage advice to anyone who crossed her path. She would entertain every guest that came into her home with true southern hospitality; a drink, napkin, and a smile. Her friends and family knew that time spent in the sitting room or around the patio table with Jackie would be entertaining, thought provoking, and sometimes a bit difficult; if asked for her opinion, you had also be prepared for her answer. She left an indelible and lasting impression on everyone who spent time with her. The world is considerably less without her in it. We love you, Mom! A memorial service will be held at Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlsbad on Tuesday, December 10th, at 11 a.m. Jackie will be cremated and her ashes scattered at sea in the same location as her husband, on what would have been their wedding anniversary, December 29th. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions made to Coast Kids Theatre (in care of) www. startheatre.biz in the name of Jackie Scanlan.
