John W. Lightner Obituary
Lightner, John W. SAN DIEGO -- John W. Lightner, an attorney who practiced law in San Diego for 50 years, died on December 4, 2013 at age 87. He was born May 8, 1926, in Portland, Oregon, where his father was a hardware salesman. Following the death of his mother when he was three, his father's two sisters helped care for him. He joined the Navy in 1944 and saw brief duty in the Pacific as the war ended. John attended Stanford University as an undergraduate and earned a law degree from the Stanford Law School in 1952. He moved to San Diego where he began work as an attorney in private practice. He formed legal partnerships with Bart Sheela, Peter J. Hughes, Ramon Castro and many other attorneys over the years. Toward the end of his career, he practiced with his daughter, Claire. John enjoyed the practice of law and devoted himself to the profession. He was a Certified Family Law Specialist, a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and a retired member of the San Diego County Bar Association. John married Joan Greytok, a teacher from Pennsylvania, in 1956 at St. Joseph's Cathedral in San Diego. They resided in Point Loma and had eight children, all of whom attended local schools. Following his retirement from the practice of law, John worked in the garden, read, took up piano and art, and played golf with friends at the San Diego Country Club. He was a kind, modest, generous man with a subtle sense of humor. He was a loving husband and father, and is dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Joan; a sister, Joan Watt; his children, Anne, Julia, Mary, William, James, Claire, Bruce, and Amy; their spouses; and by seventeen grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 14, at St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Church in San Diego. A rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m., the Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., and a reception will follow Mass in the St. Therese parish hall at 12:00 noon.
