Frank Andrew Forbes Obituary
Forbes, Frank Andrew 09/28/1919 ~ 12/06/2013 McMINNVILLE, OR-- Frank Andrews Forbes, a longtime resident of San Diego County, Calif., died Dec. 6, 2013, at the Hillside Retirement Community in McMinnville, Ore. He was 94. Born in Sherman, Texas, on Sept. 28, 1919, to Frank (Sr.) and Hazel Forbes, Mr. Forbes spent his early years in Texas, but moved with his family to Los Angeles in the late 1920s. He attended school in the Los Angeles area, graduating from Los Angeles High School. He then enrolled at Stanford University, where he was a standout quarterback on the Stanford football team, including participating on the 1941 squad that won the Rose Bowl against Nebraska. His academic career was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in November, 1941. He was approved for flight school and after being sent overseas, he became a highly decorated bomber pilot with more than 300 missions, primarily out of North Africa and Sicily. He flew more than 25 different types of aircraft during his military career. After his return to the U.S., he met his prospective bride, Marjorie Montgomery. They married in 1944 in Los Angeles. Following his separation from the USAAF and graduation from Stanford, Mr. Forbes began a career with the Aetna Life Insurance Company in 1946 in Los Angeles. In 1951, he was promoted to manager of the group division of Aetna's San Diego office. The Forbes family settled in the Point Loma area with their twin sons (born 1947) where they lived for the next 21 years. Another son was born in 1952. Mr. Forbes was an accomplished golfer and was a member of both La Jolla (where he served a year as president) and Pauma Valley country clubs in San Diego County. He also was a member of the Air Force Reserve, from which he retired with the rank of colonel. In the early 1960s, Mr. Forbes realized a lifelong dream when he and several friends purchased an 800-plus acre ranch near Durango, Colo. For 44 years, this property was a family vacation spot, and, eventually, became Mr. and Mrs. Forbes' primary residence. Around this time he also returned to one of his other loves - flying. He owned several twin-engine aircraft and the family took frequent trips to locations in the U.S. and Mexico. In 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Forbes moved to Pauma Valley. Following Mr. Forbes' retirement in 1976, the couple traveled extensively. They enjoyed Europe, especially England, but often said that the trip to a game park in Kenya was their favorite travel experience. They also visited such destinations as Bora Bora, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, China, Japan, Canada and Panama. The couple moved to Colorado in 1991, and lived on their ranch there full-time until relocating to McMinnville and selling the Colorado property in 2007. Mr. Forbes was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Marjorie, who died Dec. 11, 2011. The couple had three sons: Steven (Evelyn), of Encinitas, Calif.; Gregory, of Las Cruces, N.M.; and Martin (Carolyn), of Tigard, Ore., three granddaughters, Jessica (Tyler) Mueller, Kristen Forbes and Hannah (Rob) Marshall; and two great-grandchildren. Joint inurnment services for the couple will be held during the summer of 2014 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. Macy & Son Funeral Directors of McMinnville is handling arrangements.
