He is fond of stating shortly there after he received a personal letter from President Truman stating "he has been selected by his friends and neighbors" to join the US Army. So for the next two years he served in the Korean war, working as a mechanic for the US Army motor pool. After his service he returned to Drew Motors and enjoyed 15 years as a parts salesman and parts department manager. Dow spent most vacations with his family in Northern California visiting Carol's Brother Jim, a forester with the US Forest Service. He decided that he wanted to be a forester as well, and in 1967 he left Drew Motors and moved to Arcata, CA to attend Humboldt State.
