GREENFIELD - Clifford T. "Spuddy" Russell Jr., 66, of Greenfield, died Feb. 13, 2013, after a brief illness at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He was born in Keene on June 14, 1946, to Clifford T. Russell Sr. and Beulah E. (Jones) Russell.

Mr. Russell spent most of his life in Greenfield, leaving only to serve his country in the U.S. Army in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade from 1965 to 1967. He continued his service with the U.S. Army Reserve until 1971. He was in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. He worked as a supervisor at Hitchners Manufacturing in Milford for 37 years before retiring in 2011. Clifford was an active member of the Bennington VFW and the Antrim American Legion. He was a volunteer fireman for the Town of Greenfield for 50 years, served as assistant chief for 14 years, and continued his service as a fire warden for the town of Greenfield.

Clifford loved the outdoors. He was member and officer of the Crotched Mountain Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club since 1972. He also served as Hillsborough County director of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association. In addition to snowmobiling, he loved hunting, fishing, golfing and NASCAR.

Clifford is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Irene Russell of Greenfield; his daughter, Stephanie Blackall of Manchester; and his son, Raymond Russell of Greenfield. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon and Jennifer Blackall of Manchester and Christopher and Felicia Russell of Nashua. His surviving sisters include Kathy Courser and her husband, Glen, of Dalton, Diana Rantilla of Bennington, Deborah Russell of Belmont, Cheryl Paakkonen of Belmont; and his brother, Ronald Russell and his wife, Joanne, of Greenfield. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

services: Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Feb. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Greenfield Meeting House, 776 Forest Road, Greenfield, with a memorial service to immediately follow at 3 p.m. The Rev. Daniel Osgood will officiate.
