HOOKSETT - George R. MacLellan, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 20, 2014. The son of Peter Leo MacLellan and Josephine Manning MacLellan, he was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Manchester, where he resided throughout his life.
He attended Manchester public schools including Central High School, and graduated from Portsmouth Priory and Harvard University. He served during World War II as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and studied meteorology for the armed forces at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon his return to Manchester, he rejoined his family's business, Amoskeag News Agency, where he proudly remained until his retirement at age 77. A dedicated, lifelong Democrat, he served as a delegate to the party's national convention for Adlai Stevenson and Eugene McCarthy. In 1980, he was appointed by Gov. Hugh Gallen to be New Hampshire's Director of Economic Development. His endeavors to better the state he loved while he held this position were among his most-valued professional accomplishments.
He enjoyed his retirement, spending time with his children, grandchildren and loving wife in Manchester and Rye Beach and Placida, Fla. He remained an avid reader, swimmer and beach lover throughout his long life.
He is survived by his beloved "Cherie," Jacqueline B. MacLellan; as well as his children, Mary E. MacLellan of Los Altos, Calif., Jacqueline Russell Merriam of East Greenwich, R.I., Susan C. MacLellan of Merritt Island, Fla., and C. Peter MacLellan of Manchester; 10 grandchildren, Luc, Charles and Paul Bergevin, Robert Russell, Allana Merriam, Poleena and Anatoly Vassiliev, Amanda, George and Peter Nathaniel MacLellan; a sister, Rhoda MacLellan Rice; and a brother, Peter Leo MacLellan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary MacLellan Lyons.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, at Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., Manchester. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 207 Hemlock Street, Manchester.
