BRENTWOOD - Joseph C. Swasey, 101, died Aug. 13, 2014, at Exeter Hospital. He was born in Brentwood at the Swasey homestead on Oct, 25, 1912, the son of John Fall Swasey and E. Christine Swasey. He was the sixth of 11 children. He attended Marshall's Corner School, a one-room schoolhouse, for all eight grades. He graduated from Sanborn Seminary, Kingston in 1931, and Franklin Union Technology School, Boston, worked for General Motors, Boston, and Bird & Sons, Walpole, Mass.He returned to Brentwood with his family in 1948 to assist his father with the farm, continuing on after his father's death. He married the former Nellie B. Burbeck of Newton, his classmate, in 1937.During World War II, he served in the Coast Guard Reserve, Boston. After moving back to Brentwood, he volunteered for the Brentwood Police and Fire Departments, served on the Board of Adjustments, Planning Board, and became a school board member after the Swasey Central School was built. He was a member of Keeneborough Grange for 85 years, New Hampshire Farm Bureau, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, one of the directors of the New Hampshire Farm Museum, Milton, when it was first organized, and a member of several timberland and conservation groups. He was a longtime holder of the Boston Post Cane.He was predeceased by his wife in 2012 and three brothers and seven sisters. He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Swasey Flanders and husband Frank, Barbara Swasey-Keir and husband Robert; three granddaughters, Debra Flanders Springfield and husband Robert of South Berwick, Maine, Kristen Harkness of Mansfield, Mass., Kari Flores and husband Victor of Milford; six great-grandchildren, Anna, Lauren and Nathan Springfield, Ethan and Lindsey Harkness, Stefan Flores; and two special caregivers, Dale Collins and Evelyn Blaney.

SERVICES: There will be no calling hours. A service will be held at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the family cemetery at 138 Pickpocket Road, Brentwood, following the service.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the NHSPCA, P.O.
