ELKINS - Lindsay Mathewson Collins, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at his home in Elkins.

He was born in Springfield, Mass., in March of 1922, the son of William Oliver and Edna Lindsay Collins. His early schooling was in Westfield, N.J. He earned his BCE at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1947 and an M.S. in civil engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Lindsay served in the Navy during World War II as an enlisted man and officer doing convoy escort, mine sweeping, and spent three years in the Pacific with amphibious forces on the USS Rushmore, LSD 14.

His professional career was as a municipal engineer in New Jersey and Colorado, as a consulting engineer doing all phases of sanitary and civil engineer's duties, and as a New Hampshire state employee handling state and federal grants for municipality wastewater projects.

In retirement, Lindsay worked for six years doing research and recordkeeping for the Family Records of New London to help in publishing "Our Voices, Our Town, A History of New London, N.H. 1950-2000." He was an active member of the Mayflower Society. A lifelong sailor, he always enjoyed being on the water. Other hobbies included genealogy, square dancing, RVing and working with stained glass.

Lindsay is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Collins; son Lindsay M. Collins and wife Ruth; daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Collins and husband Scott Matsumoto; daughter Jean Collins and partner Gail Barry; and granddaughters Katharine and Sumi Matsumoto..

services: Calling hours will be held at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London, on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Elkins in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Kearsarge Area Council on Aging, P.O. Box 1263, London 03257.
