RUMNEY - Ralph Arthur Berg Jr., 83, of Rumney, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Golden View Health Care Center in Meredith, after a lengthy illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born in Lowell, Mass., on Aug. 13, 1929, he was the son of Ralph A. (Sr.) and Ruth (Emerson) Berg. Ralph grew up in Chelmsford, Mass., graduating from Chelmsford High School in 1946. He then went on to attend and graduate from Bryant & Stratton Business School.
Ralph proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Ralph was a lumberman who owned and operated a number of different sawmills in Rumney and the surrounding region over the past 40-plus years, initially as a partner in the Berg and Ireland Lumber Company and later as the owner of R. A. Berg, Inc. Lumber Company. In later years, he also became a licensed real estate agent.
In the finest sense of two simple words, Ralph Berg was a "good man." His word and firm handshake were all that anyone would ever need for an agreement. Ralph was quick-witted and had a great sense of humor, though you had to listen carefully, sometimes, or you'd miss the point. An honest, quiet gentleman, Ralph had little interest in drawing attention to himself, and although he did his best to remain anonymous, he was known as a kind and generous man to those he was able to help. In addition to the dedication he showed to his family and his businesses ventures, Ralph was also a passionate and very talented woodworker, clockmaker, and trainer of his faithful German shepherd dogs.
Ralph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Evelyn H. Berg. He is survived by his two sons, Christopher Berg and wife Joann and Deane Berg and wife Kim; daughter Mary Manita; sister Natalie Wright and husband William; brother Edward Berg; two stepsisters, Susan Landi and husband Vincent and Gaye DeCoux and husband Pete; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
services: A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 9, 11 a.m. in Highland Cemetery, Rumney. The Rev. Edward J. Charest, pastor of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, will officiate. For Ralph's Book of Memories, go to mayhewfuneralhomes.com.
