Born in Schaghticoke, N.Y., on July 11, 1932, Ray was the son of Frank E. and Mary J. Monty. Ray moved to Alstead with his family in 1938, graduating with the class of 1951 from Vilas High School after winning the state championship in basketball.
A lifelong resident of Library Avenue, Ray served proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 aboard the USS Suisun in the South Pacific. Upon returning to Alstead, Ray married Kathryn Allen of Lempster on Nov. 19, 1955. Ray and Kate, as she was known to him, were happily married for nearly 40 years. She predeceased him in 1995.
Ray worked for St. Johnsbury Trucking for 32 years, retiring as a dock/dispatch supervisor. A tireless worker, he was loved and respected by co-workers and customers. After work, Ray would often be found coaching a baseball team on Milot Green, or grooming trails and building suspension snowmobile bridges as a founding member of the Tri Town Trailblazers Snowmobile Club. His skills as a Yankee engineer/inventor came in particularly handy at these times. He was always tinkering and coming up with new ideas and contraptions. Ray loved golf. He was a member of Hooper Golf Club for more than 30 years, enjoying many memorable moments. Here he built lifelong friendships.
Ray was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Club, both of Bellows Falls, Vt., as well as the Alstead Outing Club and VFW, both of Alstead. He was a big fan of the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots, but reserved his loudest cheers for the Boston Red Sox and was lucky enough to celebrate many championships.
Ray loved to travel and took trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Ireland and other places. He cherished trips to Myrtle Beach with his loving companion Carlene, with whom he spent the last 18 years of his life. He enjoyed snowmobile outings, dances at the town hall, golf matches, and was happiest surrounded by family and friends. There was nothing better to Ray than a big backyard barbecue with loads of friends and family, with kids running every which way.
Ray was a devoted husband and companion. He was the most loving and caring father, a doting grandfather and great-grandfather, a beloved son and brother and a trusted and loyal friend. He will long be remembered for his warm and genial nature and his quick wit, always ready with a laugh, a joke, a mischievous prank and a big grin. Ray had a huge heart and would help anyone at any time, whistling while he did. He was Papa Frog and Angel Ray. Just like the show said, "Everyone Loves Raymond."
Ray is survived by his loving companion Carlene Frazier; his sons. Ray Monty Jr. and wife Jeanne of Bellows Falls, Mark Monty and wife Laurie of Milton, Vt., Shawn Monty and wife Mary of New Boston; daughter Kelly Fisher and husband Pete of Essex, Vt.; grandchildren Amber, Heidi, Jessica, Ray III, Jed, Alicia, Cody, Timothy, Bailey, Madison, Michael, Josh, Jennifer, Elijah and Vivianna; and seven great-grandchildren.
One of 16 children, Ray is survived by his sisters, Roberta, Lucille, Bonnie and Betty, and by his brother Paul. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary; his sisters, Marie, Loretta, Francis, Teresa, Annette, and Victory; and his brothers, Dennis, Dick, John, and Joe.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home, Bellows Falls, Vt. The funeral service is Wednesday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at the Third Congregational Church, 14 River St. Alstead.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery following the service. A reception follows burial at the Orchard Room at Alyson's Orchard, 54 Alyson Lane, off Rte. 12 south in Walpole from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
