EPPING - Richard "Dick" Ernest Averill, 81, died unexpectedly on Feb. 8, 2013, at his home in Epping.

He was born May 18, 1931, in Epping, son of the late Arthur R. and Nellie (Ellison) Averill.
Dick was one of four children. He was a graduate of Epping High School and was an accomplished athlete for the school in baseball, basketball and cross-country track. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1952. Dick served during the Korean War as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and was discharged in 1954, earning the rank of sergeant. Later, he was employed as a police officer and postal carrier in Newmarket and later spent many years as the service manager at Dreher-Holloway in Exeter.
Dick was very proud of the fact he was recruited to play baseball for the Boston Braves.
He was an active member of the Richard A. Mitchell American Legion Post No. 51 in Epping, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
In his younger years, Dick was a successful deer hunter. He was always an avid fisherman.
Dick lived the majority of his life in Epping and was formerly of Newmarket.
He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Averill Yerardi of Rochester and Lisa Averill Trial of Newmarket; three sons, Larry Richard Averill of Newfields, Bruce Averill of Epping, and Daryl Wade Averill of Raymond; eight grandchildren, a sister, Susanne Averill Bennett of Northwood and several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: There are no calling hours.
Chapel services will be held at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, with military honors in April. Please follow brewittfuneralhome.com for a specific date and time.
