Candia/Deerfield - Richard E. "Stubby" Gilbert, 78, died March 27, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long illness.Stubby was born in Brockton, Mass., on Jan. 8, 1936, the son of the late Joseph and Priscilla (Whiting) Gilbert and raised in Abington, Mass.Stubby was a union carpenter for many years in Boston and New Hampshire. He was a Candia police officer in the mid-'70s. Stubby was the owner/cook of Stubby's Place for 15 years before retiring. He was also the owner of Carl's Septic & Trash For Cash for many years. And for a short time, he also sided homes.He was a 32 degree member and past master of the Rockingham Lodge No. 76 F&AM in Candia and a Bektash Shriner in Concord. Stubby was a member of the Police Square Club and the Family Campers Association. For many years, he was Candia's building inspector, selectman, planning board and zoning board member.Stubby enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida in the winter, going to Mother Earth (a Native American powwow) and other powwow's all over the U.S. He loved telling stories, being around people and helping others. Also he enjoyed organizing the Deerfield powwows and chaperoning dances at the Deerfield Town Hall.Stubby was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Roberta J. (Sullivan) Gilbert, in 2012; his son, Shawn M. Gilbert, in 1986; and his brother, Allen Gilbert. He is survived by his two children, Kimberly J. Gilbert of Deerfield and David E. Gilbert of Barnstead; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brothers, George and Joseph Gilbert; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services: Friends are invited to Maiden-Petrin Funeral Home, 45 High St., Candia, on Friday, April 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. A funeral will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m. at Maiden-Petrin Funeral Home. Pastor Bryon Moore will officiate. A spring burial will be held at the family's convenience.
