PORTSMOUTH - Robert J. Zubkus, 89, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, surrounded by family members.

Bob was born in Portsmouth on May 5, 1924, to Polish and Lithuanian immigrants, the late Alexander and Ceslawa (Goliembiewska) Zubkus.

He attended St. Patrick School and graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1942. He later attended Penn State University and Butcher School in Toledo, Ohio.

Bob served in the U.S. Air Force as a B-24 gunner during World War II and later in the Air Force Reserves. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion and a member of Corpus Christi Parish.

He worked as a newspaper printer at the Portsmouth Herald for 17 years. Subsequently he owned and operated Cabot Street Market for 10 years. Bob also later worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard , and after retiring worked for the Portsmouth Housing Authority.

In his youth, Bob played baseball for the Plains Rangers, a local club team, which was the equivalent of present day American Legion ball. He was an avid sports fan and had a passion for reading, gardening, dancing, collecting old records, yard sales and entering as many contests as possible. Over the years he won two cars, two Super Bowl trips and numerous grand prizes.

In his later years Bob enjoyed playing bingo, senior citizen activities, and ballroom dancing with his former wife, Rose. He always looked forward to watching his grandchildren play their various sports, attending family events and listening to polka music. He was proud of his Polish heritage and known for his great sense of humor and love of family. He will be lovingly missed.

Bob is survived by his sister Helen Smith of Portsmouth, his former wife and friend Rose Zubkus of Portsmouth, a son Robert A. Zubkus and wife Elaine of Dover, daughters Linda Greco and husband Steve, Patricia Holt and husband Richard, and Cheryl Fratamico all of Portsmouth, grandchildren Jennifer, Katie and Christine Zubkus of Dover, Allyson, Steven, and Ryan Greco of Portsmouth, Victoria and Rick Holt of Portsmouth, Matthew, Alexandria, and Justin Fratamico of Portsmouth, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother Alfonso Zubkus and sister Alberta Clay.


SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer Street, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Patrick School, 125 Austin St., Portsmouth, 03801.
