FRANCONIA - Wilfred "Willie" L. Wessels, 87, of Franconia, passed away on June 13, 2013, at the Lafayette Center in Franconia.

Willie lived in Franconia his entire life except for the time he spent in the military. He graduated from Dow Academy in Franconia. He was a private first class in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Philippines. He ran the printing press for the Littleton Courier for over 30 years before retiring.

Willie was an active volunteer for his entire adult life. He was a longtime member of the VFW-Howard Shawney Post 816 in Littleton, and served as quartermaster for several years. He served as selectman for the town of Franconia from 1961 to 1979; he was a volunteer firefighter, and served as department treasurer for 17 years; and served as a water commissioner for the Franconia Water Department for 29 years. Willie enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, playing cards and cheering for the Red Sox, Patriots and the Celtics. The family would like to give a special "thank you" to all of the people from Lafayette who took such good care of Willie.

Willie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marge Wessels; three daughters, Deb Johnson and her husband, Skip, of Newbury, Sue Wessels and her husband, Tracy Sousa, of Mansfield, Mass., and Roxi Wessels of Franconia; a son, Will Wessels and his wife, Sue, of Epsom; six grandchildren, Tim, Betsy and her husband, Michael, Matt, Ryan, Alex and Katy; one great-grandchild, Anna; and a brother, John Wessels of Littleton. Willie was predeceased by his sisters, Katherine Splude and Helen Cassidy.

services: Services will be held at the Pillsbury Phaneuf Funeral Home in Littleton on Saturday, June 22, with calling hours from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and a service immediately following.
