Monday November, 11 2013, Benjamin A Ross passed away peacefully at home with his family. Benjamin was a WWII veteran, having served for the United States Marine Corp from 1943 to 1946 in the pacific and surviving the battle of Iwo Jima. Upon returning home he attended Cortland State Teachers College, where he both earned a Bachelors of Science Degree and met Virginia, his wife of 55 years. In those years following, he earned two added Masters Degrees. In 1950 he began a thirty year career at NY Mills High School working alongside his wife Virginia in the Department of Physical Education. His appointment as Athletic Director was soon to follow and finally, in 1980, he retired as the school Principal. Undoubtedly he may be remembered most for his many years of service coaching N.Y. Mills Marauder football. He is survived by four living children and their families, Susan and Rick Broat, son, Zach and daughter, Emily; Mark Ross and his three children, Raeanne, Mandy and Dominic; Mike and Lisa Ross, sons Jake and Adam; Jim and Ann O'Brien, children Patrick, Grace, Katie, Matt and Ben, also surviving are one great-grandchild, Trey. His wife Virginia and daughter, Eve, predeceased Benjamin. A celebration of life will be held for both Benjamin and Virginia Friday evening at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front Street, Vernon. Family and friends are invited to call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will immediately follow calling hours at 7:00 p.m. Private burial will be in Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center, NY. Donations in memory of Benjamin may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, New York, 13413.
