David L. Hoffman
Oneida
David L. Hoffman, 72, of Oneida, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013, with his loving family by his side. David was born February 7, 1941, at Oneida City Hospital to Guy and Gladys Hoffman of Munnsville. David attended Stockbridge Valley Schools where he was FFA officer for the National Convention. After graduation in 1961, David served with the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965 as a heavy equipment operator and later as a Chaplin's assistant, stationed in Korea. On August 8, 1964, David married the love of his life, Rosemarie Smith, at St. Joseph's Church in Oneida. David was employed in the service department of Niagara Mohawk until his retirement in 1997. David was involved in many organizations. He was a Call Firefighter for the City of Oneida, a member of the Munnsville American Legion Post 54, past Commander of the Oneida American Legion Post 169 and a member of the Durhamville Vets Club. One of his greatest passions was his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. David served as Cub Master of Pack 23, Scout Master of Troop 23 and Commissioner of the Se/Ta District. Even after his kids were no longer active, he continued to train hundreds of scouts around the area and was very well-known in the scouting world. David enjoyed many hobbies, including spreading joy to children everywhere, fishing and playing cards. He also had a great love of animals. It didn't matter what it was, he would treat it as family. This was never more evident than with his faithful companion, his Beagle, Hunter. David could be seen all over the city riding his scooter with Hunter leading the way. David is survived by his loving wife, Rosemarie; his daughter, Melinda Wood and fiance, Dana Hicks, of Oneida; and his sons, Guy Hoffman, of Oneida, Andrew Hoffman and wife, Terri, of Canastota, and David Hoffman, Jr., and wife, Jennifer, of Oneida. He had seven grandchildren, Khryste, Zachary, Natalie, Olivia, Violet, Erin and RJ, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three very special aunts, Violet Lamb, Marion Lamb and Arlene Lamb; his sister-in-law, Kathy and spouse, Frank Hobbie; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Walter and Kathy Smith and Charles and Paula Smith; three nieces, Carrie, Jennifer and Kristie; and three nephews, Matthew, Jason and Daniel. David was a kind, generous man with a heart of gold and a laugh that could melt your heart. He will be greatly missed by many. There will be a celebration of David's life on Saturday, March 2nd, from 1-7 at the Munnsville American Legion Post 54, East Hill Rd., Munnsville. Friends are invited to come eat and share memories. Dress casual at Dave's request. There will be no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wanderer's Rest, Canastota. The family would like to send its deepest thanks to the Oneida Fire Department, Vineall Ambulance and the medical staff of Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion for David and his family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home, 322 Washington Ave., Oneida, NY, 363-2650.
