Dr. Frank J. Kroboth, Jr., 90, of Ewing, NJ, died on June 11, 2013, in his home, after a vibrant and generous life, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 18, 1922, in Binghamton, New York, Kro realized his zest for learning at a very young age, skipping two grades in elementary school before going on to graduate from an accelerated Syracuse University college and medical school program in 1946. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and married Teresa M. Kroboth, a US Navy nurse and lieutenant, on July 5, 1947. Together they traveled to Mexico to work in the Public Health Service before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1949 where Kro completed a surgical internship at the Wangensteen Clinic and a five-year surgical residency and fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. He earned the Master of Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Kroboth returned to central New York and established a surgical practice in Olean before moving to New Hartford. Together, he and a medical school classmate established a surgical practice in Utica; a third partner later joined them before Dr. Kroboths eventual retirement in 1989. A long-time resident of New Hartford, New York, he provided care for thousands of patients who came to know him for his surgical skill and uncanny wit. Many became his loyal friends. He practiced out of Faxton and St. Elizabeths Hospitals in Utica. For years, he also travelled to care for patients in Herkimer, Ilion, Little Falls, and Rome. He served the medical community as President of the Syracuse Medical Alumni Association, President of the Oneida County Medical Society, and President of the Faxton Hospital Medical Staff. Kro and Teresa moved to Ewing, NJ to be close to their daughter in 2004. He loved the outdoors and over the years enjoyed time on the tennis court, and downhill and cross-country skiing. Despite significant cardiac compromise, he managed to walk 18 holes of golf with his friends only three weeks before he died. After 61 years of marriage, Teresa died in 2009 with Kro by her side. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Frank J. Kroboth, III, and Dr. Patricia Dowley Kroboth, of Pittsburgh, PA; his daughter, Mary Pat Kroboth Berends, of Pennington, NJ; his cherished grandchildren, who fondly called him "Papa;" Andrea Joy Albrecht and Christopher J. Albrecht, of Morristown, NJ; Christopher James Kroboth Berends, of New Orleans, LA; and great-nephew, John Dowley Prendergast, of San Francisco, CA. Kro loved seeing young people develop and helped many achieve their educational goals. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Frank J. Kroboth's name to Covenant House New Jersey, 330 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102, (973) 286-3445. The family will celebrate his life with a private Catholic Mass.
