Mary Jane (Dewey) DeWeerth, age 72, died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, NY, on January 23, 2014. Born October 5, 1941, in Kewanee, IL, to the late Robert and Margaret (Cole) Dewey of Camp Grove, IL, Mary graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, with a B.S. in Education. She earned her Master's Degree in Special Education from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. Mary was a passionate educator, teaching elementary and special education students, and served on the board of Community Bridge, a program for adults with disabilities. Mary lived in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and most recently at Preswick Glen in New Hartford, NY. Mary was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved gardening, reading, bird watching and adored her cats. She was an avid Minnesota Twins baseball fan and also enjoyed sewing, cooking and traveling in her RV. Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Eldon DeWeerth; daughters, Jennifer DeWeerth (Stephen Ellingson) and Deborah (John) Hofland; grandsons, Evan and Samuel Hofland and Zach and Mesafint Ellingson; sisters, Martha (Scott) Harden and Barbara (Paul) Schindler; and brother, William Dewey. She was preceded in death by daughter, Rebecca (DeWeerth) Peterson. A memorial service will be held in Minnesota on June 29, 2014.
