New York Mills
William (Bill) Russell Blank, 96, of New York Mills, went to his rest on May 13, 2013, at the Presbyterian Home in New Hartford. Bill was the son of the late William Nicholas and Marguerite (Pugh) Blank of Washington Mills. Bills wife, Elizabeth, died in August 2012, just a few days short of their 70th wedding anniversary. Bill leaves two of his three sons and their wives, William K. and Lenora Blank, of Canton, Marvin and Charlene Blank, of Oriskany, and his late son Ronald's wife, Sandra Blank Gibb, of Redding, California. He had six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bill attended Conkling School and Utica Free Academy. He went on to receive his B.A. degree from Union College in Nebraska. He attended the University of Michigan and the University of Nebraska, receiving an M.A. degree. Additional grants and degrees were earned through the National Science Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, Case Institute of Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, Utica College, Atlantic Union College, Mohawk Valley Community College and Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. He also pursued the doctoral candidate program at Syracuse University. Bill taught in many educational institutions, but his longest period of employment was at Whitesboro Central School from 1950-1978 where he was the math department chairman for much of that time. He also taught physics at Rome Free Academy and math part-time at Utica College. Sixty-two years of teaching and tutoring math attest to the love he had for educating young people. He served in the Army for 3 years during World War II in the area of the Asiatic-Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bill was an active member and held various leadership roles at the Utica International SDA church. He had a strong faith in God and a special interest in creation science research. A graveside memorial service for family and friends will be announced at a future date. The family would like to acknowledge the special care given to Bill while he was a resident at the Presbyterian Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be given to the Presbyterian Home or to ALS Force (http://alsforce.org), an organization started by Bills son Ron in 2003 during his valiant five year battle with ALS. Burial arrangements are being handled by Wolanin Funeral Home, Inc., 266 Main St., New York Mills. www.wolaninfuneralhome.com
