BOB SAGONA 1/24/1928 - 5/1/2014 Bob Sagona was born on January 24, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York. He passed away on Monday, May 1, 2014, in Apple Valley, California. Bob grew up in Long Beach, Long Island, New York, where he attended West Elementary School and Long Beach Junior-Senior High School, then transferred to St. Leonard's Academy, Brooklyn, New York, and graduated in June of 1946. Following six years enlisted service, with rank of Sergeant, Bob entered the Armor Officer Candidate School, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1952. Serving two three-year tours of duty in Germany, Bob was a platoon leader with the 510th Tank Battalion, Manheim, and a company commander and general staff officer with the 3rd Armored Division at Kirch Goens, and Frankfurt. Between those tours, he served on the staff of the US Army Language School, Monterey, California. Following his second European tour, Bob was assigned to Northeast Ohio where he was Army Advisor to several Ohio National Guard Armor, Infantry and Artillery Battalions. Retiring in 1967 after 21 years active service, Major Bob, who held a California Life Teaching Credential, was employed by the Riverside Unified School District, serving 22 years as the first retired Senior Army Instructor of the Army JROTC Battalion, Riverside Poly High School. Major Bob retired from Poly High in 1989 following 22 years of service, having worn the US Army uniform a total of 43 consecutive years. An Apple Valley, California, resident since 1977, he entered public office and was elected to the boards of the Apple Valley Park and Recreation and Fire Protection Districts. From 1998 to 2010 Bob was an elected member of the Apple Valley Town Council where he served as Mayor, Mayor Pro-tem, and Councilman. A business administration major at Kent State University, Ohio, Bob completed a variety of college and military education couses, including the Armor Officers Advance Course. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, two awards of the National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the Occupation (Germany) Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 20 Year Device. Bob also holds the Teacher's Medal, awarded by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, for service at Poly High. Bob is survived by his loving wife Linda and Sr. Dorothy Sagona, R.S.M.; sons Jim (Jean) and Bill Sagona; daughters, Carol Conlin (Jim), Eileen Keister (Lou), Patricia Faux & Judith Eckert (Rick); Joe LeClair, Tammy Strobel (late husband Jeff Strobel), James LeClair (Staci), Monique M. LeClair; 19 blended grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 1 great- great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill, and sisters, Jewel, Peggy, and Sr. Margaret Sagona, R.S.M. Viewing will be held at Our Lady of the Desert Catholic Church, 18386 Corwin Rd., Apple Valley, CA 92307, on Thursday May 8, 2014 from 9-10 a.m.; Rosary from 10-10:30 a.m.; Funeral Mass at 10:30 am. A reception at the Pastoral Center will immediately follow services.
