RANCHO VIEJO, TX. -- Theodore Duane Staber passed away peacefully at home on December 30, 2013 with family by his side.
Ted, a longtime resident of Rancho Viejo, was born in Kingsley, Iowa, on September 22, 1929 the son of Amy and John Staber. Ted grew up in Sioux City and attended Trinity High School where he became a star halfback. Known as "swivel-hips", no one could touch him once he had the football. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Magdalene (Maggie) Bitsos, on December 31, 1949.
Ted was an independent contractor and owned his own construction company. Over the years he built numerous houses in Sioux City. He and Maggie moved to Rancho Viejo in 1980 after a number of years visiting as Winter Texans. He continued his construction business and built a number of houses in and around the Rancho Viejo area. For several years he also served as Fire Chief of Rancho Viejo's volunteer fire department.
Ted was an avid and excellent golfer. He was a member of the Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club and most days he could be found on the golf course. He knew all the "ins & outs" of playing the game. At one time he held a handicap of 2 along with numerous holes-in-one! When not on the golf course Ted loved socializing with his neighbors. He could usually be found stopping to talk while on his daily walk or drive. Ted's other passion was dancing and listening to music. He was a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge and for many years a regular at the club's weekly dances. Some of his favorite music included Lawrence Welk, Johann Strauss, and big band. He also loved to cook and put forth many a spread on the family table.
Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie, and his parents, John & Amy Staber.
He is survived by his brother, Howard (Delores) Staber, of Sioux City; his three children, John (Patti) Staber of Edwards, CO., Kathryn (Ken) Trachte of Rancho Viejo, and Teresa (Brian) Smelker of Lafayette, LA.; three grandchildren, Richard (Caroll) Hamilton of Houston, Elizabeth (Ari) Jackson of Saxtons River, VT., and Jared Staber of Edwards, CO.; three step grandchildren; Lisa (Rob) Renfroe of League City, TX., Brian (Kelly) Trachte of Houston, and Emily Smelker of Atlanta, GA.; two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Asher Jackson; and three great-step grandchildren, Ryan Renfroe, and Caroline and Samuel Trachte. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in Mont Meta Memorial Park next to his loving wife, Maggie.
A private memorial service for family members will be held at the gravesite.
Friends may pay their respect at his residence on Saturday from 1 to 5 PM.
Sympathy cards can be received by his family at his residence.
