LLOYD, Gerald Nairn (Jerry)

1934 - 2013

Passed away peacefully on July 21, 2013, at the age of 79, with his family by his side. Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years Christina; daughters Catherine and Shannon; grandson Jordan; sister Elaine (Bob); brothers-in-law Hector, Ian (Pat) and Bill (Rosalee).

Born on January 5, 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to W.J. (Bud) and Christina Lloyd, he was raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario and attended Fort William Collegiate high school. He completed his undergraduate degree at George Williams College in Chicago, Illinois and graduate work at the University of Washington. He earned a Graduate Diploma in Education Administration from Oregon State University and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Jerry began his career as a high school teacher in Abbotsford before moving to BCIT, first as Athletic Director, then as Dean of Students and finally as Principal of the Aviation Campus. He spent his final working years as President and CEO of the BC Aviation Council.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jerry was active in many associations over his working life. He was President of the Fraser Valley High School Athletic Association and Director of the BC Boys Basketball Association. He was Founder and President of the Totem Athletic Conference, the 4-West Athletic Conference and President of the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League. He was a member of the 1983 Vancouver Grey Cup Marketing Committee.

Jerry was a long time Director of the Abbotsford Airshow. He served as President of the Abbotsford Flying Club, the International Northwest Aviation Council and the Quarter Century in Aviation Club. He was Executive Director of the Aerospace Industry Association of BC and the Helicopter Association of Canada. He served as Chairman of the BC Aviation Council, the Parallel Runway Task Force YVR and the Advisory Committee to the Board of NAV Canada. He was the 2005 recipient of the William Van Horne Visionary Award for outstanding leadership and development of air tourism.

Jerry was a caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, phenomenal public speaking skills and larger than life presence. He was a unique and talented individual who will be greatly missed.

No service by request. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC.
