On Monday February 10, 2014 our husband, father and grandfather took his last breath at 6:32am with his wife of 57 years holding his hand. Earl "Mike" Rider had achieved 90 years on this earth and after suffering another stroke left us. One of the last things he said was "you can't keep a good man down!"Mike was born April 25, 1923, in Camden New Jersey. At his father's passing he became responsible for providing for his Mother and younger sister. At age 14 at the height of the depression he left school and went to work with the CCC's. He later spent time making up his missed education by attending night college.
From May 21, 1941 to May 23, 1946, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard/Merchant Marines and for the rest of his life loved to share stories of his service on the E.M. Messick, USS Prudent, USS Randall and Lightship #108, working in their engine rooms as a Machinists Mate. He again served his country during the Korean Conflict and it was during this time while ashore in Liverpool England that he met Mary "Maureen" McGrath and they married April 2, 1956.
Mike and Maureen lived in North Hollywood, Canoga Park and finally in 1978 arrived in Camarillo California. During this time they had 3 children: Mark Rider (Joyce), Patricia Sentianin (Bernard), and Martina Porter (Robert). Mike fully supported his wife's and children's Catholic faith working hard to provide Catholic School Education. He was also active in the Holy Name Society at St. Joseph and Worked in Canoga park and volunteered with Oasis through St. Mary Magdalen's. Mike and Maureen have four grandchildren, the joy of their hearts; Megan, Emily, Paige and Luc.
What we learned from our Dad was to work hard, provide for your family, take care of those we love and do our best in school, work and life. Over the years Dad loved to take cruises with Maureen, fish with his son Mark, watch Luc play in the garden, watch the birds feed and old war planes fly overhead. He loved hearing Megan and Paige sing and Emily became his favorite nurse. He loved eating barbeque especially if made by Mark. His granddaughters fondly remember the play house he built for them when they were little. He also very much loved the partners his children choose in life.
A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated at Padre Serra Catholic Church, 5205 Upland Road, Camarillo, at 11:00 am on Monday, February 17. Please help us to celebrate a life well lived.
