11/1/40 - 1/14/14
A self-described "imperfect man made perfect by faith in Jesus Christ." John Fitzgerald succumbed to cancer on January 14, 2014, at his home in Oxnard, CA. John was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer last March. A native Californian, John was born on November 1, 1940, in Bell, CA, to James and LouElla Fitzgerald. He also spent a portion of his childhood in Grants Pass, OR. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, CA.
John and his late wife Mary were blessed to have made their home and raised their two children in the communities of Ventura and Ojai. They shared 42 years of marriage. After her passing eight years ago, God was gracious in bringing together John and Sheree in marriage, and they were given more than six wonderful years to experience a second love. John had a love of justice and a heart for God, and answered his calling by choosing to devote himself to a career as a law enforcement officer. John retired as a Sergeant from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office in 2000. Known for his contagious smile and winsome personality, he will be greatly missed, not only by his wife and immediate family, but also by his fellow Faith family, countless treasured friends, fellow golfers, and former colleagues in the law enforcement community.
He is survived by his wife, Sheree, and his children and grandchildren: daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Brian Fogata of Ventura and their children, Danielle, Elizabeth and Kevin Everett, and Josh, Kai and Sean Fogata; son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Dan and Michelle Fitzgerald of Ojai, and their sons, Joseph and Jonathan. He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Karen Fitzgerald of Ojai, and their family.
Special gratitude goes to John's long-time and trusted family physician, Dr. William Speitel, for his amazing care; also to his oncologist, Dr. Kevin Chang, and his team at the Infusion Center at the Coastal Communities Cancer Center; as well as to Dr. Fogel and the staff at Cabrillo Radiation Oncology. The sensitive care provided by Livingston Hospice was invaluable in John's final weeks.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Community Church, where John was a member, located at 723 South D Street, Oxnard, CA, with Pastor Rick Anderson officiating. If desired and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Bible Baptist Church of Oak View, P. O. Box 126, Oak View, CA 93022; or to the Ventura County Rescue Mission.
