Jerry Ballew Gerald (Jerry) M Ballew of Visalia, California passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 1, 2013 at Redwood Springs Convalescent Hospital surrounded in his last days by family and friends. He was 92. Jerry was born November 15, 1920 to Monroe (Manny) and Monte Jane Ballew in Lindsay, California. A lifelong resident of Tulare County, he attended schools in Strathmore where he excelled in academics, and the tennis squad taking honors in doubles. He was a World War II veteran and as a Sea Bee served in the South Pacific, building structures and Air Bases for the military in Guam and Maui. The war years left him with the building experience that served him so well the rest of his life as the working foreman and partner with Red Miner, Visalia's premier builders of the 50's and 60's. Visalia still boasts some of their commercial and housing construction developed in Green Acres and on Mooney Boulevard. Jerry retired in his mid 30's with income coming from so many of the partnership enterprises. Golf, fishing, back packing into the High Sierras, and watching his beloved 49ers became his primary athletic activities when not playing duplicate bridge or building and enjoying the mountain cabin at Pinehurst. In 1965 he married Trin Roy, to whom he was lovingly devoted. His proposal to her included a pledge to care for her children, which he faithfully did. In Trin's final illness there was nothing he would not do for her. As a family man, he helped to build and develop Sci-Con, and participated in the children's school, church and sports activities. He taught by example, a work ethic passed on to the younger generations. He loved traveling with friends to the National Parks, New England, Canada and Mexico. Gardening, walnut ranching, furniture refinishing, birdhouse building and square dancing were among his many passions. He joined the West Visalia Kiwanis Club and was on the board. In his last days Jerry said that he had had the best life anyone could have; he would not have changed a thing. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, sister Dorothy Ballew, brother Donald De Los Rinker, Step Fathers De Los Rinker and Pat Taylor, his beloved wife of 41 years, Trin Ballew, and Son-in-law Hal Burger. Left to honor his memory are his son Rob Ballew and wife Tracy of La Quinta; stepson Rick Roy and wife Kay of Greenfield, MA.; stepdaughter Julie Burger of Visalia; son and daughter of the heart, Brian and Malai Black of Visalia; sister in law Linda Small and her son, Paul Rinker; grandson Jeremy and wife Vanessa Ballew of Santa Maria; grandson Dayne Ballew of San Diego; their mother Laura Ballew; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and one great-grandson Luke De Los Ballew; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. On Monday September 2, 2013 Family and Friends attended a celebration of Jerry's life at the Ballew Ranch with luncheon following at Lum Lum's in Visalia.
