Michael John Bivona Michael John Bivona passed away on August 2 at the age of 70. He was born to Jennie and Charles Bivona in Brooklyn, New York on May 19, 1944. After high school, he joined the army and quickly made sargeant at age 19. After an honorable discharge in 1964, he moved to California and stayed with his sister, Mary, while attending San Jose City College. In 1967, he started San Jose State University where he met his wife, Susie Williams. In 1970, he earned a masters in sociology, married Susie, moved to Visalia and started teaching at College of the Sequoias. He taught sociology there for 34 years. Mike loved teaching and did all he could to help his students understand and succeed. He liked to read and learn new things. He loved to travel and never met a rollercoaster he didn't like. He enjoyed going to movies and listening to music. Mike loved his many dogs, especially his beloved Sadie and never missed an opportunity to take the dogs for a walk or to the dog park. He helped many other animals by fostering dogs and cats for Valley Oak SPCA since 2006. Above all, Mike loved his family. He was always working on some project involving the house, yard, or cars to ensure our comfort and safety. We will all cherish the memories of our last vacation in June, knowing that Mike thoroughly enjoyed sharing his granddaughter Bella's first trip to Disneyland. Mike battled courageously through many illnesses in his life and managed to keep his happy spirit and sense of humor. When he realized that this last battle was not to be won, his only thoughts were of his family's well being. Although we will never stop loving and missing him, we are comforted knowing he is in God's hands and finally free of pain and illness. Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Susie, his son, David Bivona of Visalia, his daugther, Jenna (Dustin) Ashford and his granddaughter, Bella Ashford of Visalia; his mother-in-law, Irene Williams of Visalia; his sisters, Mary Barraco of San Jose, Ca, Connie Seldin of Smithtown NY, Paula Mirro of Levitown NY, Terry Herman of Galt, CA and his brother, Peter Assetta of Hernando, FL. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces and their children. Mike will be laid to rest with full military honors at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA on September 5, 2014 at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Valley Oak SPCA (vospca.org). Condolences may be emailed to abbypaws1@aol.com.
