Roy Sumida Roy Sumida was born in Visalia, CA on July 11, 1923. He passed away peacefully at his home on June 3, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, daughter Sandy Tokunaga (Jerry), granddaughter Rory, and son Wesley (fiancé Peggy Jeffcott). He also leaves behind his brother Jack Sumida, sister-in-law Jane Sumida, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. After graduating from Visalia Union High School in 1941, he attended COS for a year until he and his family were interned in Poston, AZ during WWII. In 1945, he graduated with honors from Idaho State University with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Roy spent the following 10 years working for Thrifty Drug Store in Los Angeles. In 1955 he and his brother, Jack Sumida (also a pharmacist) started Roy's Drug Store in Visalia and operated it for 40 years. In addition to being a successful pharmacist he was also a founding member of the Mineral King National Bank and the president of the Visalia Rotary Club, Central California Sideband Amateur Radio Club, and Visalia Buddhist Church. He also served on the boards of the YMCA, Kaweah Delta Hospital Foundation, and the COS Foundation. Roy was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend; his clarity, wisdom, and guidance will be missed dearly. A memorial service will be held at the Visalia Buddhist Church (514 E. Center St., Visalia, CA) on Saturday, June 14, at 10:00 AM.
