Sawato John Hatakeda Obituary
Sawato John Hatakeda Sawato John Hatakeda passed away on the evening of January 16, 2014, at the age of 91. John was born August 18, 1922, in Visalia, California, to Sawajiro and Iseyo. He moved to Japan at the age of 2 when his mother tragically passed away, but soon returned to his father's ranch in Ivanhoe, California. Several years later, his father married his step-mother, Yayano. He attended Ivanhoe Grammar School and Visalia High School where he graduated in 1941. He was at COS in 1942 until the war broke out and he was interned in Poston, Arizona relocation camp. He attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa for one year and returned to Ivanhoe in 1943. In 1945 he enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to Minneapolis where he trained in language intelligence. He was honorably discharged a year later and again returned to Ivanhoe to the family ranch. In 1948 he met Yoshiko Nagata from Irvine, California, married in 1949, and in five years had three beautiful daughters; Amy, Marian, and Joyce. They resided in Yettem, California, and he and Yo successfully farmed numerous crops for 70 years in Ivanhoe and Yettem. Cold, sleep-deprived nights were a way of life in the winter, even in his last months when his ranch was managed. It was in his soul and was a farmer's way of life. He was an active and dedicated member of the local Kiwanis and Visalia Buddhist Church. John loved to be with family and friends. He was an outdoorsman, and an accomplished fisherman. He loved to take people on fishing trips to share the thrill of catching fish, while Yo faithfully prepared breakfast and delicious box lunches in the wee hours. Things always tasted best to him outdoors, especially food cooked over a campfire. So, at our final summer vacation on the beach last year, to his delight, that is exactly what we did. For decades our family spent summer vacations at Pismo Beach collecting memories of clamming, fishing, and simply being together. John is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Yo; his daughter Amy and husband Ted Tellian of Clayton, Ca.; daughter Marian and husband Gordon Ah Tye of Fresno; and daughter Joyce and husband Michael Lucid of Geyserville, Ca. Loving grandchildren include Amy's children Courtney and Kevin; Marian's children Ryan & wife Emily, and Whitney & fiancee Nathan Leis; and Joyce's children Phillip and Mackenzie; one great grandchild, Harper Rose, born this past December to Ryan and Emily. Thank you to all of our friends and family who have provided support and love during this difficult time, as well as the wonderful Drs. and caregivers at Kaweah Delta Medical Center and Transitional Care facility. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 21st, from 4pm to 7pm at Miller Memorial Chapel in Visalia. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd, at 2pm at the Visalia Buddhist Church. Arrangements by Miller Memorial Chapel,Visalia.
