BETTY J. JOHNSON
Known to her friends as "BJ" died peacefully on June 9, 2014 at the age of 88; after having a stroke. She spent her final days at Knollwood home for military retirees in Washington, DC.
She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Purdue University
with a Bachelor degree in Home Economics. There she met the love of her life, Charles C. Johnson, Jr., "CC" and they married on Christmas Day in 1946. They traveled extensively enjoying trips to China, Egypt, Turkey, South Africa and many other places. For 30 years they wintered in their condo in Hawaii.
BJ moved to Washington, DC with CC in the 1950's. In addition to being a homemaker, and raising two children, she worked as a teacher in adult education at Ft. Belvoir and at Headstart in New York City during her husband's tenure as Health Commissioner for Mayor Lindsay. She was active in the community with the Links, the Hillandale Landscape Committee and doing volunteer work at her church, St. John's of Lafayette Square. Her boundless creativity was expressed in the way she dressed, and decorated her home. She also did party and event planning for herself and others. In addition, she loved gardening, and all flowers as long as they were pink and she stayed active in her aerobics classes.
She was preceded in death by her husband CC in 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Johnson of New York and her son Charles C. Johnson, III and family of Maryland. On Friday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Church of Lafayette Square, 16th and H Streets NW. Interment private.
