Died on June 18, 2014. Carl was born in San Diego, California on June 29,1943, son of the late Dr. Charles Frederic and Edna Anne Leddin Gell. Carl spent his professional career in banking, law, insurance, and philanthropy. After completing military service, he was a trust officer and General Counsel for a large local bank, a founding partner in a law firm, and General Counsel for a regional property and casualty insurance company. Later in his career, he turned to philanthropic and fundraising work, serving as Director of Development for the Salvation Army, National Capital Area Command, and working for the Central Union Mission. Carl was very active in his community. He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Washington, serving as president from 1997-1998, and as a member of the board. His irreverent sense of humor endeared him to his fellow Rotarians. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Mary and Daniel Loughran Foundation and the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a proud Eagle Scout. He raised funds for the DC Rape Crisis Center and Catholic Charities. He was also a member of the Army-Navy Club. Carl enjoyed traveling anywhere with ships and water views and collecting classic model cars.
Carl and his wife, Jane, were married for 35 years and have four children: Brittain Villaflor (Bob), Charlie Gell (Christianne), Christy Johnston (Jay), and Annie Watkins (Jared). Carl has six beloved grandchildren, Jensen, Joseph, and Carroll Villaflor; Katherine and Erik Gell; and Lena Johnston.
A memorial service was held at Georgetown Visitation on June 20, 2014 for Carl's immediate family. A contribution in Carl's name can be made to the Central Union Mission or the .
