Deana Shulman died at age 96 on September 18, 2013 in McLean, VA. Mrs. Shulman was born in 1917 in Marshalltown, IA to Minnie (Schwartzman) and Joseph Krantman. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa in 1937, majoring in journalism and French. In 1938 she married Herbert Shulman, MD, who served in Italy and North Africa in WW II, and after the war, they moved to Waterloo, IA, where Dr. Shulman practiced internal medicine for thirty years. In 1976 Dr. and Mrs. Shulman moved to Jerusalem, Israel, and divided their time between Israel and Palm Springs, CA. They came to McLean in 1994 to be near family.
Survivors include her children Myra Shulman of McLean, VA (Col. K.W. Gooch), David Shulman of Jerusalem, Israel (Eileen Lendman), Joseph Shulman of Canandaigua, NY (Denise Larsen), and Anita Shulman of Baltimore, MD; nine grandchildren, Margot Mezvinsky, Vera Ovadia (Marc), Elsa Smithgall (David), Eve Mezvinsky (Charlton Bonham), Eviatar Shulman (Yara), Mishael Shulman (Erika Sasson), and Edan Shulman (Dina Berkley), Benjamin Shulman, Cara Shulman; and 14 great-grandchildren, Serena, Gabriel, and Daniel Sarch, Juliette and Mimi Ovadia, Alexander and Ethan Smithgall, Charlton Bonham, Nahar, Inbal, Laila, Be'er, Matan and Ezekiel Shulman.
Mrs. Shulman was deeply beloved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a role model for them. Her family and friends will always remember her loving kindless, keen intellect, and generosity of spirit. She was a talented pianist, ceramicist, and china painter and a biblical scholar with extensive knowledge of Judaism.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 22 at King David National Memorial Park . Donations may be made to the .
