Of Springfield, Virginia passed away on January 21, 2013 at the age of 87. Gene was born September 21, 1925 in Dawson, West Virginia to Lillie and Joseph H. Barlow. He was one of 11 siblings. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served briefly as a corpsman during World War II and the Korean War. He moved to the Washington DC area as a hairdresser at the Mayflower Hotel early in his career. In December 1953, he married Sylvia Christene Simms also a hairdresser from West Virginia. In July of 1963, they opened Eugene Hairdressers in Annandale which they operated for 36 years.
Gene had many passions and lived his life on his terms. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved Montana and classic cars, and traveled abroad in his later years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, photography, and caring for his orchids. He spent many years tailgating with friends at Redskins games.
He was preceded in death by his wife Chris, parents and nine of his siblings. He is survived by his daughters Robin Jepson (Skip) of Falls Church, Kimerly Joca (George) of Woodbridge, two grandchildren Alexandra and Zachary Jepson, and a brother Robert of Bristol, Virginia.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with inurnment immediately following at Fairfax Memorial, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia.
