GARY LEE AKIN  

Gary Lee Akin, son of James Booker Akin and Mary Elizabeth Akin, was born on December 13, 1946 and departed this life on October 3, 2013 in Isle of Palms, SC. A resident of the Northern Virginia area since the 1970's, Mr. Akin was retired from the Department of Defense after 42 years service and was currently a defense contractor for the Department of Defense. Mr. Akin was a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the United States Navy, a Kentucky Colonel, a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Russian New Year's Eve Ball Committee, and The Army and Navy Club. Mr. Akin supported Wounded Warriors, Kentucky Colonels' Good Works Program, the Kennedy Center Circles, and Hexagon. Mr. Akin is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Rolando Akin; his son and his wife, Phillip Todd and Coletta Akin; three grandchildren, Ruthie Lynn, Sophia Marie and James Arthur; by three brothers and their wives, James Dale and Sandra Akin, William Wade and Alberta Akin, and Douglas Taylor and Sherry Akin, all of Kentucky. Mr. Akin's funeral was held on October 9, 2013 with burial in Greensburg, KY. Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Church of the Annunciation, 3810 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC at 1 p.m., with reception to follow in the church hall.
